KAIST opened an international platform to explore the dialogue between art and emerging technologies. Held on October 19, 2023, at KAIST’s main campus in Daejeon, the “AI+ART Symposium” marked the inaugural official event of the KAIST Art Museum. With artificial intelligence at its core theme, the symposium examined how AI is reshaping artistic practices and the cultural value of creativity. The program began with an opening keynote by Kay Watson (Serpentine Gallery, London), who posed the question “Can art shape the technologies of the future?” and highlighted how artist-led experiments can influence technological innovation. Prof. Yuk Hui (Erasmus University Rotterdam) followed with a lecture on “Art at the Boundary of Artificial Intelligence,” reflecting on the philosophical implications of art in the age of AI. Further presentations by Seong Eun Kim, Jens Hauser, Yiyun Kang, Sukmo Kim, Fumihiko Sumitomo, Prof. Sung-Pil Park, and Jang Un Kim offered perspectives ranging from immersive storytelling and historical critiques to curatorial strategies and socio-ethical reflections. Concluding the symposium, Prof. Jinjoon Lee delivered a closing keynote titled “Self as Method,” urging participants to reconsider the role of the artist and the essence of creativity in the AI era. Beyond technical debates, the event underscored a broader cultural inquiry: whether artificial intelligence will replace human creativity or open new horizons of collaboration between humans and machines.
